Choosing Your First 3D Printer: A Friendly Beginner's Guide
Everything I wish someone told me before buying my first machine

If you've been lurking in 3D printing YouTube videos for a while, you already know the rabbit hole is deep. Filament types, slicer settings, bed levelling, "your first layer is everything" — it can feel overwhelming before you've even unboxed anything.
I run Frostyware 3D in Chandigarh, and at least once a week someone messages me on Instagram asking the same question: "What printer should I buy?". So instead of typing the same answer fifty times, I figured I'd put my honest take here. No affiliate links, no sponsored picks — just what I'd tell a friend.
First, ask yourself one question
What do you actually want to print?
This is the only question that matters. The "best" printer doesn't exist — only the best printer for your projects. Let me break it into three honest buckets:
1. Functional parts, prototypes, jigs, mechanical stuff
You want filament (FDM). Strong, cheap to run, easy to learn. Think: phone stands, GoPro mounts, drone parts, that bracket your IKEA shelf is missing.
2. Highly detailed miniatures, jewellery, dental, smooth statues
You want resin (MSLA / DLP). Insane detail. But — and I cannot stress this enough — resin is a commitment. It smells, requires PPE, IPA washing, UV curing, and the prints aren't as tough as filament.
3. You don't know yet, you just want to mess around and learn
Start with filament. Always start with filament. You can always add a resin printer later when you know what you want.
The realistic budget tiers (Indian pricing, 2026)
I'll be blunt about price ranges, since I know the Indian market specifically.
- ₹15,000 – ₹25,000: Entry-level Creality Ender / Anycubic Kobra. They work, but expect to tinker. Bed levelling, the occasional clog, learning the hard way.
- ₹30,000 – ₹55,000: This is the sweet spot today — Bambu A1 Mini, Bambu A1, or the Creality K1. Auto bed levelling, decent speed, way fewer headaches.
- ₹70,000 – ₹1,20,000: Bambu P1S, X1 Carbon. Enclosed chamber, fast, multi-material capable. If you're doing this commercially or printing engineering plastics like ABS/ASA, jump here.
- Resin entry: ₹25,000 – ₹40,000 for an Anycubic Photon Mono or Elegoo Mars. Add ₹8,000 for a wash & cure station (don't skip it).
My honest recommendation for 80% of beginners in 2026: Bambu A1 (not the Mini) at around ₹45,000. The combination of build volume, ease of use, and print speed has genuinely changed what "beginner-friendly" means.
The things nobody warns you about
Filament storage matters more than you think
PLA absorbs moisture from humid Indian summers and starts printing crusty by week three. Get a sealed dry-box with silica gel from day one. ₹600 well spent.
Bed adhesion is the #1 cause of giving up
If your first layer doesn't stick, nothing else matters. A PEI textured plate or a glass bed with glue stick will save your sanity.
Slicer software is half the printer
Most decent printers ship with their own slicer (Bambu Studio, Creality Print). You don't need to learn Cura from scratch. Just use whatever your printer ships with for the first six months.
"Auto levelling" is not magic
Even printers with auto bed levelling expect a roughly level bed first. Watch a 10-minute first-layer video before your first print.
What you'll actually print first
Here's a fun pattern I've seen across literally every customer-turned-hobbyist I know:
- Week 1: Benchy boats. Lots of Benchy boats.
- Week 2: Phone stands, headphone hooks, cable organisers.
- Week 3: That one Thingiverse model with 12,000 likes that's actually amazing.
- Week 4: You realise you need a multi-colour printer.
- Week 6: You've started modelling your own things in Tinkercad.
This is the natural progression. Embrace it.
When to consider getting your printing outsourced instead
Real talk — if you only need 5–10 prints a year, the maths doesn't work. The printer, filament, electricity, learning time, failed prints... you'll spend ₹40,000+ in your first year easily.

Print something useful. Print something for a friend. Print something silly. Print a lot. The hobby gets infinitely more fun the moment you stop chasing perfection and start solving little problems with plastic.
